Greece's classical period was brilliant but brief. Only India had the institutional and cultural continuity to compound knowledge across three millennia.

Section 6 · The Deliberate Distortion

Why Was India Erased?

The standard Western narrative runs: Mesopotamia → Egypt → Greece → Rome → Europe. India does not appear. This is not an accident. It is a deliberate construction. In the 18th and 19th centuries, British and European scholars needed to justify colonial rule over India. They could not simultaneously claim to be "civilizing" India while acknowledging that India had been the world's largest economy, the source of mathematical and astronomical knowledge, the birthplace of surgery, the center of the world's largest maritime network.

James Mill — who never visited India — published the History of British India (1817), framing India as primitive and in need of civilization. Lord Macaulay's 1835 Minute on Education explicitly stated the goal: create Indians who are "Indian in blood and colour, but English in taste, opinion, morals, and intellect." Max Müller — funded by the East India Company — promoted the idea that Indian knowledge was "spiritual" and "pre-scientific."

The results: Indian contributions to mathematics were attributed to "Arabic numerals." Indian trigonometry was attributed to Greek origins. The entire edifice of Indian knowledge was systematically downgraded. The real chain of knowledge is not Mesopotamia → Greece → Europe. The real chain is India → Arab World → Europe.
